Wont be a popular choice because of its age but to me its easily a top 3 Tales the battle system hasnt aged a bit and it has a fun diverse cast. Still a safe place to start if youre. Symphonia chronicles is a bit weird and not quite like a regular Tales game and also technically a sequel.
If youre interested in the seriess history go back and play Phantasia otherwise move on to the latest game Berseria. If you like Tales combat a lot definitely play Graces at some point. Tales of the Abyss is the eighth mothership title in the Tales of series and is special as the franchises tenth-anniversary game.
Its also great to start with an older game and see for yourself how the series has changed through the years. Symphonia just didnt age well at all dungeons are still amusing but the combat isnt the best the story isnt well paced and it has some mediocre charactersdialogue urgh Colette. Symphonia is probably Tales equivalent of FF7 aka the one people think of the most often when you ask them about Tales Of especially if they havent actually played any of the games.
Abyss is the best game in the series overall so maybe save that one for when a Remaster hits. The combat is simple the characters are wonderful the story is amazing and if you ever want to play Zestiria somewhere down the line not recommended as a beginner as it has issues you can always do that knowing you know the backstory. Symphonia and Abyss are both excellent games so go ahead and start with one of them. Also Zesteria was released first. Vesperia - Yuri is probably my favorite protagonist in the series.
Unfortunately the game was short-lived and it was shut down in 2018. Tales of Arise already has microtransactions called game boost. Story wise you can start with any of them but if you want to feel like the gameplay is improving with each play Symphonia then Abyss then Vesperia.
Abyss and Vesperia are my top 2 favorite Tales games I havent played all the Tales games yet but my top 5 is AbyssVesperia DE Berseria Symphonia and Arise in this order I voted Vesperia though XD. Pffft people have nostalgia glasses on. Thats the chronological order and they still rank among the best Tales of games.
If you want to just start with one of the ones on PC Id recommend Symphonia. I would recommend either Vesperia for Xbox360 or Abyss for the 3DS but Im also biased towards Abyss. From favorite to least.

I really love this game. It may not be predatory and not in the way of you playing the game. Tales of Link was a mobile RPG that launched in Japan in 2014 and got a North American release in 2016.
I prefer them over all the newer ones. Some parts have aged poorly and the dungeons are needlessly frustrating I recommend just opening a playthrough every time you get to a dungeon itll spare you. Every great series has a beginning and Tales of Phantasia was Tales start.
It was later replaced with Tales of Crestoria which is still running today. Xillia 2 or graces for me. But next game they might make it that it is super slow to level up that may be forced to buy them.

5 Tales of the Abyss 78 Platforms. Because Tales of Phantasia is a late SNES game at its core it has aged much better than Final Fantasy 1. Abyss is my favourite one but It depends on what you like more if you want a more gameplay focused game I would say go for Xillia or maybe Vesperia if you want a more story driven game go for Symphonia or Abyss.
Graces Symphonia Xillia - These and above are why I love the tales series. Berseria and Zestiria has a slightly different gameplay. Wildly popular in Japan Tales hasnt pierced the West in the same way that franchises like Final Fantasy have though many of its titles remain in.
With comparatively darker themes and an antihero of sorts Berseria stands out from the other games. Another strong entry in the series is Tales of BerseriaBerseria uses a more refined version of the Tales of the battle system the Linear Motion Battle System LMBS that allows for more freedom in the arenas. Abyss - This probably has my favorite story and the best character growth for any protagonist.
If you care more about story and characters skip it. Berseria is actually a really good place to start as a beginner.
